Our status

Federal registration: in process

Expert Movers is completing its federal motor carrier registration. Our U.S. DOT number will be published here as soon as it is issued, and you can check it in the FMCSA SAFER database before you sign anything.

We won't describe ourselves as licensed for interstate moves until the federal record shows it. Once it does, our legal name and number will appear in this box and across the site, in the form federal rules require.

Until then, you're welcome to request a price range and talk through your move. Before you sign an estimate or pay for anything, check our status yourself in SAFER. You should do the same with any mover.

What the federal record shows

The FMCSA SAFER database shows a mover's U.S. DOT number, legal name, address and operating status. Look for:

  • Operating status: whether its authority is active.
  • Entity type: carrier, broker or both.
  • Cargo: household goods.
  • Fleet: power units and drivers.
  • Insurance on file, shown through FMCSA's licensing and insurance records.

What federal rules require in advertising

Under 49 CFR 375.207, an interstate mover's ads must be truthful and show its registered name and U.S. DOT number. A household goods broker has separate rules that include disclosing that it's a broker. See broker vs carrier.

Coverage for your belongings

Valuation isn't insurance, and it's easy to confuse the two.

  • Full Value Protection: replacement value, up to the declared value of the shipment. It applies unless you waive it in writing.
  • Released value: 60 cents per pound per article, at no extra charge.

Details and examples are on valuation coverage.

Questions to ask any mover

  1. What is your U.S. DOT number? Does the name match?
  2. Are you the carrier? If not, who is?
  3. Is your insurance on file with FMCSA?
  4. Can you send a certificate of insurance to my building?
  5. What's your arbitration program?
