What typically moves the number
Studio and one-bedroom
Smaller homes may hit a minimum charge on short routes. Consider a small long-distance move on a shared truck if your dates are flexible.
Two-bedroom
This is where choices start to matter. A home office, a heavy dresser or a full bookcase adds weight quickly.
Three-bedroom
Garage and basement contents can decide your final price. Sort them before your survey.
Four and five-plus bedrooms
These shipments can approach the capacity of a dedicated truck. Ask whether a dedicated truck makes sense and how your estimate handles a very large load.
What makes a home heavier than average
- Books and paper records.
- Solid wood and antique furniture.
- Exercise equipment, tools and workbenches.
- Garage and basement storage.
- Appliances you plan to take with you.
- Pianos, safes and pool tables, which are often priced separately.
How to estimate your own weight
Don't try to get it perfect. Walk through each room, list large furniture and count your likely boxes. Then share the list during your survey. A video walkthrough usually catches what a list misses, especially closets and storage.
If you ever see a company's estimate based on cubic feet, ask how it converts to weight. Federal rules require a mover to explain the conversion in writing.
