Taxes
Washington doesn't tax wages, but it does tax large capital gains, and sales taxes are high. Leaving Illinois's 4.95% helps most earners. People with equity compensation should ask a tax professional about how the state's rules apply to them.
Deadlines
Washington law gives new residents 30 days to get a state driver's license. Vehicle registration deadlines are also short, so check with the Department of Licensing soon after you arrive.

Living in Seattle
Rain is rarely heavy, but grey skies can last for months, which surprises many people. Hills and narrow streets matter too: for you, for parking, and for your moving truck. Many neighborhoods have limited curb space, and apartments require elevator reservations.
Many Chicago homes have basements that are a natural place for storage. Seattle homes may be smaller and damper, so unpack quickly and keep cardboard and paper off concrete.
Natural hazards
The region has earthquake risk and, in some summers, wildfire smoke. Check home insurance, as earthquake coverage is usually separate.
Your move
This is one of the longest lines from Chicago, at about 2,060 miles. Chicago to Washington movers has prices and winter pass advice, and a cost guide for moving across the country helps you decide what's worth bringing.
