Deadlines you can plan around
Colorado's official guidance is clear. According to the Colorado DMV, you have 30 days after establishing residency to transfer your license and 90 days for vehicle title and registration. You establish residency by owning or operating a business in Colorado, working in the state, or living there for 90 consecutive days.
Taxes and costs
Colorado's flat income tax is 4.40%, a little under Illinois's 4.95%. Property taxes are often lower than in the Chicago area, though home prices along the Front Range may be higher. Check what you'd actually pay, since there are many special districts in newer developments.
Living at altitude
Denver sits at about 5,280 feet, and many towns are higher. Expect:
- Dry air and stronger sun. Drink water, use sunscreen, and add a humidifier for skin and wood furniture.
- Lower oxygen. Take it easy for your first few days, especially on moving day.
- Baking changes. High-altitude recipes do help.
- Wood and instruments. Furniture from a humid Chicago summer may shrink or crack, and pianos and guitars will need time.
Weather surprises
Colorado winter is often sunnier than Chicago's, with snow that melts faster along the Front Range. Hail is a real risk from spring into summer, and it damages cars and roofs. Check your insurance. Mountain communities have long, heavy winters, and I-70 chain laws apply to commercial vehicles for much of the year.
Choosing where to live
Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs each have their own feel, and most sit along I-25. Mountain living brings long drives, steep driveways and higher delivery costs. Ask about access if you're considering it.
